A stone wall retaining an embankment can be built from engineered concrete block, natural stone or armour stone. Block systems offer predictable performance and a wide range of finishes; natural stone gives a more organic look and suits heritage or wooded properties.

Large architectural blocks and prefabricated blocks, including certain Techo-Bloc collections, are well suited to structural retaining situations because they accommodate geogrid and deliver solid stability. They work across a range of landscaping styles, from clean and modern to more natural-looking settings. Natural stone brings a high-end, timeless character, though it typically costs more and requires more involved installation. Without drainage, water collects behind the wall. In winter, that water freezes and puts significant pressure on the structure, which can cause it to tilt or crack over time.
On every project, we install clean 3/4″ drainage stone, a sleeved agricultural drain, and make sure water has a clear path away from the wall. That combination is what keeps a retaining wall standing straight for the long haul.
It comes down to height, slope, the loads acting on the wall, and the type of soil behind it. For small decorative walls, geogrid is generally not needed. As height increases or conditions become more demanding, geogrid becomes an important part of keeping the wall stable. We size every project to what it actually requires.
