Retaining Wall Construction in Laval and on the North Shore

A retaining wall is not simply a decorative feature. It is a structure built to hold back soil pressure and keep your outdoor space stable. When the ground slopes, shifts, or shows signs of erosion, the right wall in the right place makes a real difference.

At Paysagement Duguay, our retaining wall services cover everything from the first site assessment to the finished installation. Every project is analyzed based on topography, load, and site conditions to make sure the result holds up for the long run.

What is a retaining wall and when do you need one?

A retaining wall holds back soil and stabilizes sloped or uneven ground. It is commonly used to prevent erosion, manage runoff, and open up usable outdoor space across different levels of a property.

If your terrain has a noticeable slope, a significant grade change, or any visible signs of soil movement, retaining walls and landscaping work well together to restore stability and give the yard a cleaner, more intentional shape. Walls can also define zones, frame a garden, or reinforce areas near driveways and structures.

Types of retaining walls we build

      Structural walls in prefabricated blocks

Prefabricated block walls offer a lot of design flexibility, both visually and structurally. They come in rustic or contemporary finishes across a wide range of colours, and they integrate naturally with most landscaping styles.

These walls work for decorative applications as well as fully structural retaining situations, and they accommodate geogrid reinforcement when the height or load calls for it.

Compared to Jansen blocks or natural stone, prefabricated blocks generally require less depth, which makes them a practical option when space behind the wall is limited.

      Large architectural block walls

Large architectural blocks have a more structured, commanding presence. Their larger format creates a strong visual statement, making them a natural fit for large-scale contemporary or rustic landscape designs.

These blocks are built for significant structural applications and allow for the construction of walls that are both robust and long-lasting. We use Jansen products when the project calls for it.

      Natural stone walls

A natural stone retaining wall brings a timeless look and a presence that is hard to manufacture. Every stone has its own texture and tone, and the result is a wall that feels like it belongs to the landscape rather than sitting on top of it.

This option suits high-end properties, wooded lots, and settings where a more organic look is the goal. Precise placement and a properly built foundation are what make the difference between a wall that stays put and one that drifts.

When you want retaining walls and landscaping that age well together, natural stone is a hard option to pass up.

How we build a retaining wall that lasts

      Step 1: Design and planning

We plan a wall that is both functional and good-looking, taking into account the terrain elevations, water flow, and how the structure fits with the rest of your yard.

Step 2: Excavation and base preparation

We dig to the right depth and prepare a solid footing. Getting this right is what prevents settling or movement down the road.

Step 3: Granular foundation and drainage

A granular base combined with geotextile fabric and a drainage system gives the wall a stable platform and keeps water from building up behind it.

      Step 4: Wall installation

Each block is set with careful alignment, consistent batter, and ongoing level checks. Geogrid and compacted drainage fill are added between courses where required.

      Step 5: Finishing and integration

Cap units, lighting where needed, and clean integration with the surrounding landscaping give the finished wall the visual presence it deserves.

      Frequently asked questions

Which type of retaining wall should I choose: architectural blocks, natural stone, or prefabricated blocks?

The right choice depends on the height you need to retain, the look you want, and your budget. Large architectural blocks and prefabricated blocks, including certain Techo-Bloc collections, are well suited to structural retaining situations because they accommodate geogrid and deliver solid stability. They work across a range of landscaping styles, from clean and modern to more natural-looking settings. Natural stone brings a high-end, timeless character, though it typically costs more and requires more involved installation. Our retaining wall services include a thorough site review to help you figure out which direction makes the most sense for your project.

Why is drainage behind a retaining wall so important?

Without drainage, water collects behind the wall. In winter, that water freezes and puts significant pressure on the structure, which can cause it to tilt or crack over time.
On every project, we install clean 3/4″ drainage stone, a sleeved agricultural drain, and make sure water has a clear path away from the wall. That combination is what keeps a retaining wall standing straight for the long haul.

When does a retaining wall need geogrid reinforcement?

It comes down to height, slope, the loads acting on the wall, and the type of soil behind it. For small decorative walls, geogrid is generally not needed. As height increases or conditions become more demanding, geogrid becomes an important part of keeping the wall stable. We size every project to what it actually requires.
